Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is one of the most technologically advanced methods available today for straightening your smile. It’s an orthodontic system that uses clear, plastic aligners, rather than the metal wires and brackets of traditional braces.

Invisalign has quickly grown to become one of the most popular orthodontic treatments today, due to its convenience, comfort, and effectiveness.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign works similarly to braces, in principle, but does the job without having to use a bunch of metal and wires.

Your aligners fit snugly around your teeth and exert a gentle pressure on them that pushes them towards a better position in your mouth. Because the aligners are constantly pushing your teeth, they gradually move over an extended period of time until they’ve arrived at a better alignment.

To make your aligners, Dr. Taylor takes an impression of your mouth that’s turned into a virtual model of your smile. That model is used to map out all of the steps that your teeth need to take to achieve alignment and each of those steps is turned into a set of aligners — one for your top jaw and one for your lower jaw.

You wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day, every day. Everybody’s treatment time is slightly different and depends on the condition of your alignment when you start your treatment, but at the end of treatment, you’ll have a beautifully straight smile and several improvements to your overall oral health.

What conditions does Invisalign treat?

Invisalign treats several alignment issues with your teeth, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Teeth that are widely spaced

Invisalign can also treat malocclusions, or misalignments with your jaw, like:

  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite

Some patients also choose to use Invisalign for cosmetic purposes, like achieving generally straighter teeth.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign has many advantages over orthodontic treatment with traditional metal braces, such as:

Your aligners are made from smooth plastic, which is much more comfortable in your mouth than metal wires and brackets. Your aligners also won’t tear up the insides of your cheeks, like braces do.

Your aligners are removable, so you can care for your teeth just like you normally would: simply pop out your aligners, brush and floss as normal, and put them back in after. No need to change your diet or learn special techniques to keep your teeth clean.

Invisalign’s clear plastic aligners are virtually invisible when they’re on your teeth. So, unlike the obvious mouthful-of-metal look that you get with braces, nobody will know that you’re straightening your smile unless you tell them.
